Blog Hop Lovin'

It's that time of the week for a little bloggy blog lovin' with...
Book Blogger Hop
Hosted by Jen

Every week there's a new question, and it's a great way to get to meet new bloggers!

What keeps you reading beyond the first few pages of a book, and what makes you want to stop reading a book and put it back on the shelf?"

I really think, for me, what keeps me reading, is different every time. Really it just used to be my  neurotic behavior that dictated I finish EVERY book I started...I then one day realized how stupid that was to force myself. So know I think I just have to feel it. The characters, the setting, the voice, the flow...all of it.
The one sure way to make me put it back on the shelf, and submit to defeat, is when the writer just gives me way too much description. I mean don't get me wrong I love a good mental picture as much as the next person, but that is what my imagination is for. Otherwise I would have just stuck to watching a movie. Having to read through all the little, mundane details bores me and takes the fun out of imagining things for myself. And after all isn't that what reading is all about...imagination?!

  1. Happy Friday! I'm just like you, I always feel obligated to finish every book I start, I have a compulsion that makes me keep going in the hopes that things will magically get better which is usually not the case:) I'm getting better, but I still feel that way to some degree, though I definitely agree with you on too much description, that just yanks me right out of the story. I'm a new follower here and I hope you have a great weekend!

  2. Haven't try to put a book down yet cause I feel the obligatory to end a thing you started. Must. Do. Justice. To. Book. By. Reading. It. Have a nice weekend!

  3. I'm definitely one of those crazy people who try to finish a book once I start it. But, I get what you're saying too. You gotta enjoy it. There aren't too many books that I'm absolutely struggling through. Some I'm not LOVING, but liking alright. But, that's alright too. Nice answer! :)

Thanks for stopping by my follow friday and book blogger hop as well!

  4. These book blogger hop questions just get better and better. This one looks easy but I think it’s a trick question. We all know it’s the same answer – the writing – but we all have different perspectives of what good writing is.

Hop on over to my blog at and read my three-prong answer as I explain why I’ll decide to pick up a book or put it down in under sixty seconds.

    Happy July 4th Weekend!

  5. Hopping through. I love it when the author describes things well. It creates a better atmosphere. But not when it gets in the way of the story. It needs to flow smoothly.

  6. Hi! I'm hopping through, too, but I love your question. I'm drawn to a book when it has a good summary and hook at the beginning. I have to be in the "mood" for some books. Sometimes I feel like reading a certain genre and sometimes, another. I really dislike when the author has made bad use of dialogue...that makes me just fling a book away!
Come see me when you can...
    Love your blog, Deb/TheBookishDame

  7. Stopping by via Crazy-For-Book's Blog Hop. I'm following your blog.
