I Like Turtles

If there is one thing that Zombie Turtle Boy has taught me it would be that

There are several books out there on turtles and recently I have been reading quite a few about box turtles.

Because the books are quite similar I thought I would just do mini reviews on them just to let you know what I have found at my library.

Title: Box Turtles (Library of Turtles and Tortoises)
Published: 2004

Greta's Thoughts
This short children's book about box turtles is almost as informative as some of the handler's guides that I have read lately.

I actually learned a couple of things that those 'adult' books didn't teach me.

For instance:

*It takes 20 years for a box turtle to get full size.

*Baby box turtles take 3 months to hatch.

*Some female box turtles lay eggs no matter what.

*The spikey ridge on the turtle's back is called a keeled.

*And some pet box turtles will respond to their owner's voice.

I found that last one simply fascinating.

All in all, this is a great book for anyone interested in box turtles. The photographs are very well done. And it is the perfect book before bedtime for your little box turtle enthusiast.

Greta's Thoughts
The pictures in this book were magnificent but I found the information to be quite contradictory from every book I have recently read concerning box turtles. Also, it had a bunch of "we don't know" this or that about the box turtle because they have not been "studied" in depth enough. So much so that it made me wonder if the box turtle has ever been studied.

While it's not a bad book, this is one that I wouldn't start with if you are interested in learning about box turtles.

And some of you might ask... why are you taking such an interest in turtles, Greta?

Well, it's because I have made a friend and I really want to learn how to give him the best life I can possibly give.

Team Human by Justine Larbalestier & Sarah Rees Brennan

Team Human
By Justine Larbalestier & Sarah Rees Brennan
Publication Date July 3rd by HarperTeen
Pick up your copy at B&N, Amazon, or your local indie today!
Synopsis borrowed from Goodreads:

Just because Mel lives in New Whitby, a city founded by vampires, doesn’t mean she knows any of the blood-drinking undead personally. They stay in their part of town; she says in hers. Until the day a vampire shows up at her high school. Worse yet, her best friend, Cathy, seems to be falling in love with him. It’s up to Mel to save Cathy from a mistake she might regret for all eternity!

On top of trying to help Cathy (whether she wants it or not), Mel is investigating a mysterious disappearance for another friend and discovering the attractions of a certain vampire wannabe. Combine all this with a cranky vampire cop, a number of unlikely romantic entanglements, and the occasional zombie, and soon Mel is hip-deep in an adventure that is equal parts hilarious and touching.

Darkfallen's thoughts:

Well this review is going to be a short one because sadly this just wasn't what I thought it would be...

I want to start out by saying that I give this book 3 stars because I don't think the writing is bad, but really I wanted to give it a 2 because this book just wasn't for me. When I read the synopsis I was expecting more of a intense paranormal ya, what I got instead is more like a parody of vampires. This book is very much more of a comedy, and a lot less like the books I usually read.

I do however think most people will love this book. Especially if you are one of the many that likes to make fun of books like Twilight and the House of Night series, then this book is for you. I guess I just didn't have the sense of humor for this book, so for me I found it hard to get into to.

Overall I think this book, in the hand of the right reader, is great. Unfortunately for me I just couldn't bring myself into the right mentality and in the end had to put it down. This is definitely one of those books where you either love it, or you don't.

A Want So Wicked (A Need So Beuatiful 2) by Suzanne Young: Review

A Want So Wicked (A Need So Beautiful 2)
By Suzanne Young
Published June 26th 2012 by Brazer Bray
Pick up your copy at B&N, Amazon, or your local indie today!
Synopsis borrowed from Goodreads:
Elise is a normal seventeen-year-old girl until the day she wakes up in a desert park, with no idea who she is.

After that episode, her life takes a bizarre turn. She’s experiencing unexpected flashes of insight into people’s lives—people she’s never met before. Strangers frighten her with warnings about the approaching Shadows. And although Elise has never had a boyfriend, she suddenly finds herself torn between two handsome but very different young men: Abe, the charming bad boy whose affect on her both seduces and frightens her, and the mysterious Harlin, who’s new to town but with whom Elise feels an urgent, elemental connection—almost as if they are soul mates.

Now Elise begins to question everything about her life. Why do these guys both want her so desperately? What are the Shadows? Why does the name Charlotte inspire a terrifying familiarity? And who is Elise, really?

Darkfallen's thoughts:
After reading book one, A Need So Beautiful, I wasn't exactly sure if there was going to be a second book. Or, if there was, where it was going to go. The way the first book ended was so devastatingly bittersweet, so final, yet I was so happy to see there was more, and I couldn't wait to get my hand on the next book.

Elise is just a normal girl. At least that's what she thought until she starting have visions of a blond girl in a school girl outfit. Having memories of a past that isn't hers. Now she is left wondering what is happening to her, and what it means for her family. What if something is really wrong? What if it's fatal and she leaves her father and sister behind? What if she is losing her mind? Then she meets Abe after moving to Thistle. And then there is the mysterious guy on the Harley that she seems to be pulled to. As things begin to reveal themselves Elise learns the world isn't as it seems and she was never the girl she thought she was. Left to make an impossible choice everything comes down to the ultimate sacrifice...

I have to say that the first 50-80 pages of this book was a little slow for me. It wasn't bad, just slow and didn't hold my attention as well as I thought it should. But after that initial hump things really started to pick up and I couldn't get enough. The only other downside was that I was able to pick out the villain within the first 80 pages as well. Still I don't feel like that took anything away from the story, and the ending, particlary the last few pages, I never saw coming. But was soooooo happy it happened that way. *winks*

Elise is strong and brave. I love the way she faces everything head on, as she stumbles her way through everything she has found out about herself. Finding out that you are one of the Forgotten would be hard enough on anyone, for Elise it's even worse and she handles it in stride. I know I am being cryptic but I don't want to give anything away. Just like with the first book I adored Harlin. He is so broken after loosing Charlotte and my heart bled for him. In fact my heart broke quit a few times during this book and I'm not ashamed to say that I cried more than once.

Overall this was a great addition to the series and still a refreshing new take on angels. One that is both painful and beautiful at the same time. I can't wait for the next installment!

The Vicious Deep

The Vicious DeepTitle: The Vicious Deep
Author: Zoraida Córdova
Published: May 2012
Synopsis from Goodreads

For Tristan Hart, everything changes with one crashing wave.

He was gone for three days. Sucked out to sea in a tidal wave and spit back ashore at Coney Island with no memory of what happened. Now his dreams are haunted by a terrifying silver mermaid with razor-sharp teeth.

His best friend Layla is convinced something is wrong. But how can he explain he can sense emotion like never before? How can he explain he’s heir to a kingdom he never knew existed? That he’s suddenly a pawn in a battle as ancient as the gods.

Something happened to him in those three days. He was claimed by the sea…and now it wants him back.

Tristan is a lifeguard for Coney Island.

Sounds awesome, right?

Well, it sounds awesome to me! I've always wanted to go to Coney Island and Tristan works there... in an orange SPEEDO!!!

I'm not quite sure how old Tristan is. I'm guessing 16 but I can't be for sure... I'm pretty sure it would be against the law to RAWR at this. I do find it fascinating that he's in an orange Speedo and not red Bay Watch trunks. I mean... how does he run in slow motion? Does a speedo give enough support?

Tristan loves being a lifeguard. He loves the babes who look at him, he loves his tan, and he loves to swim.

One day something odd happens at the beach and while people are screaming it's time for Tristan to do his slow Bay Watch run in his orange speedo. He runs off to save a little girl in the water but then looses 3 days of his life and his family looses 3 days of him.

Where did he go?

Washing up on the shore after that he gets admitted to the hospital (because that's the responsible thing to do) and after fully gaining consciousness his Mom is like "We're outta here!" (which is the irresponsible thing to do).

Once home Tristan feels kinda puny after having this huge welcome home party from his swim team and lifeguard co-workers (sadly the Hoff was not invited) that he runs to the master bathroom to honk out some spewage.

This probably freaks him mom out because it would freak me out. I'd be screaming "NO NO NO!! Use your bathroom!! Damn it!! I just cleaned in there!"

We never learn if she says this or not but I'm confident she probably does. Instead what we find out is that Tristan is half mer-maid.... excuse me... half mer-man.

Now, I was kinda thinking that Tristan was gonna be some sort of Aquaman, but he does indeedy-do have a tail. And you might be asking yourself one question because Tristan asked this like a million times....

Where does his junk go?

But fear not Reader... you do get to learn where his package is hiding at.

Oh brother!!

"The Vicious Deep" is a story of a young man learning he is chosen for greatness but has to prove himself if he wishes to be accepted into a world he thought was only in fairytales.

It's just like Uncle Ben said: With great power, comes great responsibility.

If there was a theme for the book it would totally be that... oh and that boys think about their wang like... A LOT!

Published: 1993
Synopsis from Goodreads

Even though she's a real monster, Patrick Edward loves his mom -- especially when she uses her powers to tame a trio of young bullies -- in this exuberantly illustrated picture book about the universal love between a mother and child.

A beautiful children's book about a little boy who has a special kind of mama.

A Monster Mama!!

Monster Mama is indeed that... A monster! She lives in a cave at the back of the house and teaches her little boy how to do magic and roar.

But Patrick Edward isn't a monster. He just has a one as his Mama.

One day Mama tells Patrick Edward to go pick up some desert from the market. On the way he gets bullied by three mean kids. Monster Mama hears this from her cave and runs down there to make things right.

In the end they all become friends and Monster Mama saves the day even if she doesn't like people to see her.

Smart Girls Get What They Want by Sarah Strohmeyer

Smart Girls Get What They Want
By Sarah Strohmeyer
Published June 26th by Balzer + Bray
Pick up your copy at Amazon, B&N, or your local indie today!
Synopsis borrowed from Goodreads:

Gigi, Bea, and Neerja are best friends and total overachievers. Even if they aren’t the most popular girls in school, they aren’t too worried. They know their real lives will begin once they get to their Ivy League colleges. There will be ivy, and there will be cute guys in the libraries (hopefully with English accents)! But when an unexpected event shows them they’re missing out on the full high school experience, it’s time to come out of the honors lounge and into the spotlight. They make a pact: They will each take on their greatest challenge—and they will totally rock it.

Gigi decides to run for student rep, but she’ll have to get over her fear of public speaking—and go head-to-head with gorgeous California Will. Bea used to be one of the best skiers around, until she was derailed. It could be time for her to take the plunge again. And Neerja loves the drama club but always stayed behind the scenes—until now.

These friends are determined to show that smart girls get what they want—but that could mean getting way more attention than they ever bargained for....

Darkfallen's thoughts:

Everyone knows this isn't usually the type of book I read but OMG am I so glad that I did! This was a great break from the paranormal and an introduction into the contemporary ya scene.

Gigi and her two friends are super smart girls. You know the type...they take all honors classes in high school. They don't eat lunch in the lunch room, but more like the library, or in Gigi's case, the honors lounge. For the most part part they tend to be kind of invisible to the general population, and while they will probably be your valedictorian you may not know their name. They are definitely NOT the type to join the cheer leading squad, or try out for the school play, but all that is about to change...

After discovering one of their older sisters year books after she graduated and went off to an Ivy League school the three girls realize that their idol was keeping a dark secret. Sure she was smart and achieved all her goals by getting into Ivy League, but no one in high school barely knew who she was. So, deciding that they were not going to succumb to the same fate, they made a pack to go for not only the grades, but to make themselves know as well.

This book was too cute. I loved Gigi and her friends. Gigi was a lot more funny than I expected her to be, and while she was mega book smart, she was seriously stupid when it came to guys. It was a nice balance that evened it all out. And not only were the three girls perfect, but the guys and the side characters in this book were well fleshed out and played a prominent roll without weighing the story down. And don't even get me started on the resident jock, Mike. I LOVED him! He spends so much time being underrated by Gigi and the gang yet he hangs in there.

This is definitely one of those reads that sucks you in from the beginning with the right amount of drama, and humor to lighten it up, and then it keeps you turning the pages with the hint of romance until the ending that will leave you swooning long after you read the last page!

Summer Nights by Susan Mallery: Review

Summer Nights (Fools Gold 8)
By Susan Mallery
Publication date June 26th 2012 by Harliquin
Pick up your copy at Amazon, B&N, or your local indie today!
Synopsis borrowed from Goodreads:

New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery's newest Fool's Gold story proves that wild hearts cannot be tamed... Horse whisperer Shane Stryker is done with passion. This time around, he's determined to meet someone who will be content with the quiet life of a rancher's wife. And the fiery, pint-size redhead who dazzles him at the local bar definitely does not fit the bill. Small-town librarian Annabelle Weiss has always seen herself as more of a sweetheart than a siren, so she can't understand why Shane keeps pushing her away. Shane has formed the totally wrong impression of her but only he can help her with a special event for the next Fool's Gold festival. And maybe while he's at it, she can convince him to teach her a few things about kissing on hot summer nights, too-some lessons, a girl shouldn't learn from reading a book!

Darkfallen's thoughts:
I'm not usually the cowboy type but this book is definitely making me re-think that...

Annabelle is done conforming to what men want her to be. Never again after her failed marriage. So she moves to the small town of Fools Gold to start her life over working as a librarian at the local library. She's not usually what you would consider a wild girl, in fact she might even be considered boring by most people, but that's not the impression Shane gets when he sees her dancing on a bar. After Shane's divorce he's decided he is done with the wild and carefree girls that remind him on his ex. He's ready for simple, boring, and uncomplicated, which is why he knows that fiery red head dancing on the bar isn't for him. But then why can't he stop thinking about her?

I absolutely loved this book! Annabelle is an all around awesome person. She'll make you laugh, she'll make you cry. She's just one of those people that you can't help but like right away. And the way she handles Shane and all his trust issues is so relatable you'll find yourself getting lost in this story. Then of course there is Shane...wow is he beyond swoon worthy! I'm not even the type to fall for a cowboy but I would take him home with me in a heartbeat. He's funny, sexy, polite, and perfect in his faults. The chemistry between these two was perfect, and at time very, very HOT!

This is my first book by Susan Mallery and you better believe I will be reading more. So if your looking for a book that will make you laugh, cry, and fan yourself then this is the story for you.

As Wicked As They Come

Title: Wicked As They Come (Blud #1)
Author: Delilah S. Dawson
Published:  March 2012
Synopsis from Goodreads

Have you ever heard of a Bludman? They’re rather like you and me—only more fabulous, immortal, and mostly indestructible. (They’re also very good kissers.)

Delilah S. Dawson’s darkly tempting debut drops her unsuspecting heroine into a strange faraway land for a romantic adventure that’s part paranormal, part steampunk . . . and completely irresistible.

When Tish Everett forces open the ruby locket she finds at an estate sale, she has no idea that a deliciously rakish Bludman has cast a spell just for her. She wakes up in a surreal world, where Criminy Stain, the dashing proprietor of a magical traveling circus, curiously awaits. At Criminy’s electric touch, Tish glimpses a tantalizing future, but she also foresees her ultimate doom. Before she can decide whether to risk her fate with the charming daredevil, the locket disappears, and with it, her only chance to return home. Tish and Criminy battle roaring sea monsters and thundering bludmares, vengeful ghosts and crooked Coppers in a treacherous race to recover the necklace from the evil Blud-hating Magistrate. But if they succeed, will Tish forsake her fanged suitor and return to her normal life, or will she take a chance on an unpredictable but dangerous destiny with the Bludman she’s coming to love?

Step right up and let's run away with the circus!!

It sounds like something you've always wanted to do. Right? Well, it's always been something I've wanted to do. Ever since I was little I wanted to runaway with the circus and maybe learn how to ride a diving horse (don't judge me. I saw Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken and thought that was the way to go!) With that in mind, I couldn't WAIT to get my grubby little hands on this book. I mean just look at the cover!! Can you say Me-ow!! I mean... Hello Dolly!! While this is a magical book. A steam punky book. It lacked that wow factor for me.

The main broody boy is King of the Gypsies -Criminey Stain - Alright, odd name, but I can look past that. Criminy is the ringleader for the carnival... and better yet!! He's a VAMPIRE!! Well, what his closest his world has to vampires. Criminy is a Bludman.

The main girly is Tish who we later call Letitia. She is a nurse who takes care of people at their homes. One day she is at an estate sale for a recently passed patient and comes across a locket in a book. It is the shape of a heart and has a picture of a really cute guy inside. This is where our adventure begins. You see... that locket is MAGIC! When Tish falls asleep that night she finds herself in the world of Sang in the early 1900s and quite naked in front of the man who's picture is in the locket. Tish learns that the man had wished her here and that the locket she has around her neck is his. She is his soul mate and she thinks he's full of baloney.

Greta's Thoughts: While this book was mega awesome with the whole vampire, magic, bludbunnies (you heard me! Killer bunnies!!), and costumes... the main hero fell a bit flat for me. I found him not having the pzazz that I wanted him to have. I wanted him to wow me like a 1990s version of David Copperfield, I wanted him to make me scream like an Immortals After Dark hero, I wanted him to be dark but also tamable by his one true love. Ok ok... I wanted this

Too much? I mean... again... Look at the cover. I saw that and said "ZOMG YES!! Mindfreak!" All I could think about was Cris Angel. I kept dreaming that the hero would whisper, "Are you ready." But here's my beef.... He never ONCE is like he is on the cover. Not once!! Sure he wears the jacket. Sure he wears the top hat. But he also has to wear these lame gloves and he wears a shirt way too often. I mean.... I was reallylooking forward to something like this

But I never walked away with that RAWR factor! That "I want him to throw me down and make me like it" type feeling. Really, Criminy didn't make me fall in love at all. But maybe that's because I built the book up too much in my head. Because in all honesty this book was written quite well. And there were a ton of awesome ONE LINERS so you can really tell the author put a ton of effort in making this book perfect. Also, it was quite imaginative. Most of the animals have turned vampire so people have robot pets like monkeys and dogs who also work as super cool spy equipment. And I also really dug that the magic wasn't just smoke and mirrors but real live magic. The kind of magic that I thought existed when I wanted to runaway and join the circus. I also really enjoyed the traveling caravan aspect. I wouldn't mind reading more books like that. All in all... Don't build the book's hero up too much until you actually meet him. I think that would definitely help ;) So step right up and visit the world of Sang....

Are you ready?
