V.V. Aku has always believed in beautiful stories. She found the man of her dreams and her way in complex China, and wrote a fairytale of her own: The Fire of Dawn－a scintillating tale about strength, self-discovery, and a girl who dared to follow her heart.
Born and raised in The Netherlands, V.V. Aku (Veerle Ackerstaff) soon discovered that the world was a place worth exploring. After graduating high school, she set out to travel the globe until she finally touched down in China. On the border of Tibet she met Anzi Aku, a wild Black-Yi man who lives at the foot of the Himalayas. She has joined his clan and tries to find her place among the tribe and its shamans. 5 Things you didn’t know about me.

1.        Like most teens, I made my parents’ life a living hell. I hated the fact that I couldn’t be free. I saw school as prison and the years of mandatory education as unjustified jail time. Above all else, I yearned to spread my wings, turn eighteen, and explore the world. The first thing I did after graduation? I bought an open ticket to Asia and I haven’t lived in the Netherlands since.

2.      My life with a Himalayan tribe in China is no secret. But what most people don’t know about my marriage to wild, Black-Yi man Anzi Aku, is that I never said, ‘I do,’ or ‘Yes, I’ll be your wife.’ His family presented my parents with tokens of silver and expensive liquor. Normally, they would have offered my dad a dozen goats, a yak, and two horses, but realizing that these animals wouldn’t fit in their suitcase back to Holland, Anzi’s family kept it low scale.

3.       I absolutely adore animals of all kinds. I’m not a diehard vegetarian, but I never thought I would be able to endure seeing an animal suffer until I moved to China. It has been one of the biggest culture shocks I’ve had to deal with, but an important part of integration and acceptance into my husband’s Black-Yi clan. My first duty as his wife was to shave a freshly slaughtered pig (after I had nearly tore the ears off my head listening to the hog’s terrified squeals) after which the village shaman ceremoniously cut the poor animal into pieces and put me in charge of cleaning its intestines and stuffing them with blood, meat, and mushrooms.

4.      Another part of Black-Yi integration was looking like a true Black-Yi women. Soon after I started my life in the mountains of northwest Yunnan, Anzi’s family began insisting that I not only dressed like one of them, but also tried my best to be seen as one of them by their ancestors. In order to complete this trying endeavor I needed to sacrifice the virgin skin of my forearms. The shaman’s wife gathered herbs and ash then took a bunch of needles and began tattooing round dots on both of my arms. The dots represent coins which I will take with me to my afterlife.

5.      Four months ago, my husband and I found out that I was pregnant. Although we were both ecstatic, my pregnancy discomforts soon kicked into high gear. With a sudden supernatural sense of smell, life in China became unbearable. Everywhere I went, I wanted to gag on the foul blend of garlic, ginger, spices, stinky feet, unbrushed teeth, and days-old sweat. But this prenatal torment was trumped by one other. Chinese food became the most disgusting thing to eat in the world.

Guest Post with Asa Bailey/The Vampire of Highgate Giveaway!

Today we sit down with author Asa Bailey to get a look at the folklore that inspried her new book, The Vampire of Highgate.

But first...the story behind the story, with Asa Bailey.

Ever since I was a child I have been fascinated with the bizarre the fantastic and of course the dark. When I was introduced to the legend of The Highgate Vampire I was inspired by how it was a modern dark legend, one that had taken hold on the internet and throughout it's life it had used the media to spread itself - like vampirism is - this legend itself is a virus. In the age of the Internet local folk lore can go viral and grow into something that previously was not possible.

I wanted to create a world not just a story, given the chance I had been given, to write a novel I wanted to expand on the mythology of the vampire and add to its world. When I dug deeper into the Highgate Vampire legend and the areas folk lore, I found that the stories of the undead walking in the Highgate area was not something new, in fact it went back further and further in time.

The area around Highgate woods was once a Roman burial ground and is known to be one of London's oldest mass grave sites. The area has inspired stores of ghosts vampires and demons for centuries. It's maybe one of the reasons that Bram Stocker visited it for inspiration for Dracula. I took the legend right back in time, tracing it to it's roots that lead me back to biblical times. Here's why.
With a cast of modern characters charged with digging up the legend of The Highgate Vampire, I wanted to use my creative license to connect the king of the vampires to the blood line of Christ - to create a whole new vampire mythology, to give readers a richer and alternative vampire world. In the World of Highgate the vampire started with Aliza drinking the blood of Jesus, he was given the power of immortality and in these early beginnings Aliza was in fact the leader of a new religion, the Vampires. But as the times passed and the opposed religions of Christianity and Islam rose up the vampires became hidden, down trodden even and this was the turning point in vampire history that sent them along the fork in the road, one towards anger, malice and eventually the evil we see in them today.

Obviously vampires are dark and sexy, but why. This was where my thinking began.

Kenya Wright chats up Fire Baptized

Recenently, I read Kenya Wright's "Fire Baptized". All I can say is it was most awesome! And it got me to thinking.... What do these characters look like? If they were to be in a movie, who would play their parts?

Kenya has a way of drawing you into her books as you fall in love with her characters. I just kept wanting more.

So, I asked her... Who are these characters I fell in love with in "Fire Baptized"? When I dream of Zulu... who do I need to be dreaming of?

When I wrote Fire Baptized, there were defiantly several actors and actresses that flashed in my mind. Here’s my casting of the main characters in the book. I have provided a small bio of each character. I held back information on some characters since it is revealed later in the story.

Movie Cast for FIRE BAPTIZED

LANORE: Kerry Washington
Lanore is a Mixbreed which means her parents are from different supernatural species. She can control and create fire, but she hides this power and only reveals it during emergencies. She is also senior in college, and will be the first Mixbreed to graduate from the university.





MESHACK: Jason Momoa
MeShack is a Were-cheetah. His mother was Iranian. His father was African. He is the lead singer of the band Mahogany Groove, a pre-med major, and a member of the Kappa Sigma Que fraternity.





ZULU: Chris Hemsworth
Zulu is a Mixbreed. He founded the Mixbreed for Equality organization that is supported by Mixbreeds and Rebel Shapeshifters.





DANTE: Eduardo Verastegui
Dante is a 250 year old Vampire. He’s the head of the Bottelli family and has a large cross burned into the left side of his face. Nevertheless, he’s known as the habitat’s biggest playboy.





NONA:Gina Carano
Nona is the leader of the Rebels. She’s a Were-dog and when in animal form resembles a massive pitbull.





RAY: Joe Pantoliano
Ray is a Spriggan which is a type of Fairy. Pre-habitat years he served as a guard for The Royal Fairy Court.

Super Zombie Juice Mega Bomb

Note: This book was sent to me by the author for an honest review. Because this book is a Children's book about 14 year olds, I decided to have my 14 year old son read it and give me his review. The things he says and suggests are his opinion and not mine. LOLZ! That means if you let your 7 year old child read this book and it gives them nightmares... just remember - Mickey said it was ok... not me ;)

Even with the help of the town geek and lemonade-powered Super-Soakers, there's not enough time to squeeze their way out of this sticky mess. Unless the trio eradicates the zombie infestation, while avoiding the deadly zombie snot, the military will blow the town, and them, to pulp.

Their only shot is something with a lot more punch. Something like the Super Zombie Juice Mega Bomb. But even if their friendship survives, there's another problem: Someone has to lure the undead into the trap.

A Review from a fourteen year old
It was about a zombie outbreak that infects the tri-county area that Nate and Misty live in.

Nate and Misty sneak out the house to go camping and they see the mayor and he's apparently infected and they don't know it. And the mayor is about to bite Misty and Nate stops him but the mayor bites Nate in the leg but doesn't get infected which in my opinion was kind of stupid.

They go back to town to see if it's evacuated then they go to all these other places and then the go to Nate's house to get the Mustang that his Dad has and then they drive to a strip mall for supplies and then they go to Wal-mart.

While in Wal-mart they stay there for a couple days and find Cali who is a boy which is weird, and he joins them and tells them that the government has plans to bomb the place.

Mickey's Thoughts

How did you like the story?
There were no funny parts at all? I did like it but it would have been better with some funny parts. Younger people might think that it is funny but I didn't think so.

How old of a kid do you think you have to be to enjoy this book?
I would think at least a seven year old.

Were there any cuss words?
No cuss words, they say things like HOLY COW and stuff.

Does the cover make sense to the story?
They were never trapped at a cemetery. And Cali isn't there and you only see a bit of Nate. THey only went to a cemetery once to get a fire truck.

Was there any romance?
Some kissing on a cheek and crying on a shoulder

Do you think that the author was able to depict the average 14 year old?
I felt the characters were more dumb than a 14 year old, at times. I think they acted more like 6th graders.

Do you think this book is more of a boy book or a girl book?
More boy but it could be for both.

If a sequel is written would you read it?
Maybe

Were there any scary parts?
No, I thought it would be scarier but it wasn't very detailed at all when 'scary' parts happened.

Do you think this kind of zombie outbreak could happen in real life?
No, this kind of stuff only happens in stories.

Would you watch a cartoon about this book?
Probably not a cartoon series but I would a movie.

Explain what a super zombie juice mega bomb is.
It's the thing that kills the zombies... like big time. If I told you then that would wreck the book.

Who knew they actually sell BRAINS at the supermarket???

NOT ME! and it's canned...

I knew nothing of this, until a friend (Marsha) told me about it. We had this great talk last night about being cannibals, eating human flesh, brains... As soon as I brought up my desire to try brains, Marsha told me that people actually eat brains and eggs for breakfast! I was on a mission.

I would hunt for BRAINS in the morning! Apparently, you really can buy canned "Pork Brains" at certain stores... I was determined to find it. I had to go to 5 different stores, but I got my brains ☛ @ Food Lion.

This entire crazy discussion stemmed from me reading a creepy, spectacular, AMAZING book called Inside the Outside by Martin Lastrapes. Everyone needs to grab it right now! Inside the Outside is about a girl named Timber who grew up in a cult as a cannibal.

She is an excellent author. I heard about this series from some friends and decided to give it a go. I am really glad I did! I really like the story even though I was lost for a bit.

*really should not just jump into a book without reading the summary LOL*

Aden is well amazing and so are MaryAnn, Riley, and Victoria. This is a great book with lots of otherworldly action. I am very partial to Riley he makes me *sigh* handsome, protective, and sweet whoot!

I have a feeling this will only get better...get it and read it!!

The Zombies of Today w/ Death by Books & Tea

Thank you Darkfallen and Greta for having me here! Today I’m going to talk about zombies. Zombies, like all paranormal creatures, are open to many different interpretations. They can be eyes glazed over and relatively intact, or could be corpses raised by a necromancer, or they could be something else. My personal favourite type are the ones that some people first think of: shambling, grey, in various states of decay, and hungry. Why? I’m not entirely sure, but there’s something enjoyable about something that should be six feet under, on the ground, not quite alive and wanting brains.


The way they’re used is almost always the same. Ok, there is some zombie romance out there. Bad Taste In Boys by Carrie Harris, and Dearly Departed by Lia Habel spring to mind. But it seems that things more like lycanthropes and angels get a little more action in the romance area than living impaired creatures. What about vampires, which are most likely the first creatures that come to mind when thinking about paranormal romance due to the success of Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight. Yes, vampires do tend to get a lot of romance while also being living impaired. But I think that’s because most people don’t like to have body parts falling off their partner; a problem that you don’t get with vampires, you do get with zombies.


Of course, that’s the romance side. On the flip side of the uses for paranormal creatures, they do it just fine and plenty often enough. And of course, that flip side is the horror. The screams. The people running away from things considerably slower than them. On a global scale, it’s never a vampire hoard ending the world, or a pack of lycanthropes brining about Armageddon. It’s always zombies causing mass destruction on a global scale.


As you can see in books such as Charlie Higson’s the Enemy series or Alison Hewitt is Trapped by Madeleine Roux, zombies bring survivors together in such a way that threats from other creatures don’t. A death by zombie is bloody, brutal and undignified, in a way that you just don’t get with faeries, sirens, or anything else. And people tend to be rather unwilling to sacrifice humanity for this fate. Should one choose to become a vampire or a werewolf, you get speed and strength as well as the downside of requiring blood or turning furry once a month. With a zombie, you get neither-just the inability to fall down when hit with anything short of an axe round the neck, and an intense craving for brains. And humans don’t want this to happen to them. They will do anything to avoid this fate. The zombie brings humans together.


In conclusion the zombie is a great creature. There are very different to other creatures, and underneath the umbrella term of zombies you get many different types of zombie. And despite the fact that they have been somewhat shoved aside in young adult literature in favour of shapeshifters and bloodsuckers, now that their idea reserves are drying out, we are seeing zombies rise. They are becoming more common, and bringing a bit of true horror adventure to bookshelves dominated by romance. So it has started. The time of the zombie has come. Long live the zombie.

What's your favorite scary story, Ambur?

Today we have Ambur from Burning.x.Impossibly.x.Bright here to tell us her favorite scary story!

Well, when I was young I watched a lot of scary movies...I watched the Chuckie movies, or as they’re actually called Child’s Play, and the Freddy movies...er, I mean the Nightmare On Elm Street movies all the time. As you can see, I was young enough to watch these movies and give them nicknames, and to this day, I still call them that. I also used to watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and I’ll admit, David Boreanaz as Angel was my very first crush...and he still looks good. ;) While I love all those movies and shows, and they definitely gave me nightmares on countless occasions, my favourite scary story as a kid actually came from a book...a library book.



This library book was super popular, and my whole class took it out at least once. I swear, this book was coveted, and when I got my turn, I knew why. It was amazing. It was written rhythmically, there were pictures, and the stories were so creepy...and memorable.

My favourite scary story is from this book, and that book is called: In a Dark, Dark Room and Other Scary Stories. (See even the title sounds awesome!) The story is called “The Green Ribbon.” I’ll summarize it for you:

First, there is a girl with a green ribbon always tied around her neck, and then, there’s a boy. The boy and girl liked each other. He was very curious about the ribbon, and he kept asking her about it. She would never tell him. They grew up, fell in love, were married, and when he asked again, she still wouldn’t tell him. She said he’d have to wait for the right moment to find out about the ribbon. They got older, and the woman got sick. She was dying, and called him into her room. Finally, she told him that he could now know about the ribbon. Then, she asks him to untie it....and her head falls off!

As demented as it sounds, the head falling off part was the best! Haha I even found a youtube video of “The Green Ribbon” being narrated. You can watch it if you like:



So, “The Green Ribbon” wasn’t the scariest story that I’ve ever heard, nor was it the best, but it was my favourite, and it’s one I’ll never forget. That last line solidified it for me: “and Jenny’s head fell off.” Plus, the pictures always stuck out in my mind. Did anyone else read In a Dark, Dark Room and Other Scary Stories when they were younger??

Ha!  Great question…  I’ll answer it in two parts.

First, if this was the real me, I’d be screaming, running, and trying to call 911! LOL  I’m a big chicken.  In fact, I’ve been known to watch scary movies with my teens while plugging my ears and humming because the music is too creepy and I know something bad is about to happen!

So if tall, dark and handsome suddenly had fangs, I’d be long gone!

But fictional me would eat up Mr. tall, dark and dangerous.  I love a dark wounded hero with the power to kill me, but instead he loves me.  He can’t help it. *swoon*  Fictional me would lust after him and wonder if the neck nibbles were going to hurt, or hurt so good I’d want more! Hmmmm….

As a paranormal romance and urban fantasy reader, dangerous heroes in dark alleys are my favorite, but if it were real me, I’d much rather have a normal guy who thinks I’m sweet because of my personality not my blood… LOL

 And speaking of OMG yum yum give me some...and bite me harder, men...

Crafting a Heroine

Today I thought I’d speak about crafting a heroine.

What goes into that, some of you might wonder?

Well, I’m not particularly fond of the old Harlequin stereotype, the maiden in distress rescued by the handsome hunk hero.

You mean you don't like this guy?

Darkfallen: I think I just puked a little...

Greta: No way dude! That chick is really into him touching her shoulders. Cuz look at that thigh action she's giving herself. She's all like 'YEAH BABY! Rub my shoulders and I'll show you where the Nair goes.

Probably because I like mysteries and grew up weaned on Nancy Drew.

I like my heroines to have a bit of spunk

(no, can that – a LOT of spunk)

and a backbone – although they do get a bit mushy when their Prince comes along LOL

Darkfallen: I wanna be her when I grow up!

In No Rest for the Wicca, Morgan Hawkes is a “ghost whisperer” meaning she can talk to spirits who haven’t yet departed this plane. She also has a lot of voodoo knowledge thanks to her father, some of which didn’t serve her in good stead when she was a Homicide detective – so now she’ a bit leery of trusting her abilities. Her guilt over her partner’s death has also made her a bit –crotchety, shall we say?

And then enter Cole St. John. This Inheritor Vampire knows just what buttons to push on her to get a response,and to let her open up and expose her feelings. Yes, by the end of the book they’re madly in love (of course) but it was a journey for them to get to that point.

Ditto Raven Grace, the heroine of RAVEN’S KISS. A college senior, she had high expectations of a career in law enforcement, until a demon’s bite turned her into a Shapeshifter. Now a member of the Recovery – an organization who keeps the peace between humanity and errant Others – Raven’s motivated by a need for revenge on the demon who turned her. However, unknown to her, the demon had a hidden agenda, which she finds out when she makes the leap into parallel time – and meets up with a fiery, redheaded Scotsman who’s just as stubborn and opinionated as she is.

Instant love?
Hardly.

But eventually the two of them get together – because in the end, they’re good for each other – and isn’t that what it’s all about, really?

When I wrote the outline for these two strong women , I confess, I put a bit of myself into them – after all, they are my creations, how could I not?

Although I would hope I might not be as snarky or defensive as Raven or Morgan seem to appear sometimes, they both do have one thing in common: underneath their gruff exteriors beats a heart of gold – someone who would go that extra mile for someone they truly loved.
