Wolf House (Potter's Story) (Kiera Hudson #4.5)

Title: Wolf House (Potter's Story) (Kiera Hudson #4.5)
Author: Tim O'Rourke
Published: December 2011
Synopsis from Goodreads

As Potter leaves Kiera and his friends to go in search of Luke, he makes a lonely journey across the snow-capped mountains of Cumbria. Haunted by the death of Murphy, the capture of Luke and the love that he feels for Kiera, Potter reflects on his past life and the disturbing events that took place at the Wolf House.

He remembers his first encounter with the werewolves, how he had to save Murphy and Luke, and capture the serial killer who was murdering the children from the town of Little Hope.

“Wolf House” (Potter’s Story) is a novella length tale set between ‘Vampire Breed’ (Book Four) and ‘Vampire Hollows’ (Book Five) in the Kiera Hudson series.

The first four books in the Kiera Hudson Series are all from Kiera’s point of view and I think we know her well enough by now. But what about Potter? So for all the Potter fans that want to know more about him, here is his story.

“Wolf House” (Potter’s Story) A 30,000 word novella set between books four & five of the Kiera Hudson Series.

"Wolf House" lets you explore Sean Potter on a deeper level.

You mean he's not just a smart mouth who whispers, acts like a prick, then wants to be all Batman with everything?

Well, yes and no.

In "Wolf House" you get to relive his early days leading up to him becoming a police officer to one of his first missions.

It's an interesting read that will leave you satisfied in knowing why he has some of the mannerisms he does.

While I'm not a big Potter fan, I found this book to be quite satisfying. I loved the action, the suspense, and the "OH! I get it now" moments. The ending is the best! You won't believe how Mr. Tim links the entire series up with this book!! Fabulous!

Now, this is not a stand alone novel, at all. It will spoil bits of the Kiera Hudson series if you start with this book. Read them in order if you don't like SPOILER BUNNIES!!

Luke and Murphy are in this book and even a glimpse of Dr. Ravenwood.

It's a fun read that will leave you howling until the very end. Full of bite, wings, screams, and oh my's!

A must have for every Potter fan out there!

And yes ladies... the cover is explained ;)

While I guess it might have that LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD appeal with Potter and two werewolves waiting at a house to unearth a killer. I found it to have more of a Goldilox or Three Little Pigs appeal. The big bad wolf was lurking... they just didn't know when he would wind up.

The Plot:
There's been a murder! Actually, there's been quite a few! And in an un-CSI move a big bad wolf detective dude pops a cap into Murphy, makes Luke scream, and orders Potter to go find out who's been munching on all the children over in the town of Little Hope. Tagging along are two wolves that must keep an eye on him, Drake and Madison and the heavy burden that if he doesn't find the big bad wolf in three days it will be curtains for Murphy and the big house for Luke and himself.

How's he going to get out of this one?

Characters:
Potter - I still think he resembles a smart-ass Wolverine, but not as sexy.
Madison - A werewolf voice of reason? Or something a little more?
Drake - A hot headed young wolf who is suspicious of Potter and everything he does.
Murphy - The sergeant Vampyrus who takes Potter under his wing
Luke - Brad Pitt pretty boy Vampyrus cop
Detective Harker - Big Bad Wolf on a mission to take down a child killer or at least - bark orders to have it done

Greta's Thoughts
A nice short read that will keep you guessing "WHO DONE IT" till the very end

Ravenstoke (Universe Unbound #2)

Title: Ravenstoke
Author: Augusta Blythe
Published: December 4, 2011
Synopsis from Goodreads:

In Winterborne, Loie and Mia's seventeenth birthdays brought more drama and surprises than they ever expected. Now, in Ravenstoke, they are adjusting to the aftermath and struggling to keep those newfound powers in check. When Andreas is called away to England under mysterious circumstances, a new guy is sent to Salcey Ridge in his place. Cian is smarmy and cocksure and Loie wants nothing more than to unleash a hellhound on him. Unfortunately, Cian isn't the only complication in their lives as the girls must also contend with the reappearance of Mr. Winterborne himself and Loie's most dreaded fear of all - a part in the school musical. Can the girls survive the rest of junior year unscathed?

Loie and Mia are back! And this time this time they know exactly what's going on. Ever since Loie turned 17 she realized the truth. She was switched at birth and her father is a Universal. A race more "super" than humans and living in another dimension.

I was kind of thinking of Thor's Asgard here but turns out they live in Smurf houses lolz.

Andreas is back and still training Loie to tap into her inner Universal. Teaching her how to control her powers and train like the "Super" champ she is.

That is... until he gets called off to England.

He can't tell Loie and Mia why but something smells fishy.

In his place a boy named Cian comes to train Loie. With his help she is able to delve deeper into her new powers. Cian isn't letting Loie hold back and Loie doesn't want him to.

Spring Break is on the way and that means Class trips. Somehow they need to get to England to figure out what's going on with Andreas. In a way that is truely Mia-esq, she snags them a trip to London with only one little setback... it's with the Drama Club.

But what's in England? Is Andreas ok? Is there something afoot? What about Cian? Where did he go?

In this sequel to "Winterborne" a lot of questions are answered. A past in unraveled. And the truth is coming together like a puzzle.

An awesome follow-up novel.

I must admit that while I wasn't a big fan of "Winterborne", this novel impressed me. The growth of her characters is astounding and her skills as a writer has greatly improved.

Pick this one up if you like adventure and romance. You won't be disappointed!

Winterborne (Universe Unbound)

Title: Winterborne (Universe Unbound)
Author: Augusta Blythe
Published: April 2011
Synopsis from Goodreads:

Sixteen-year old Mia Winterborne is destined to be special. Details are sketchy, though, as her dad disappeared with all the answers when she was five. Mia only knows that she'll inherit her kickass superpowers on her seventeenth birthday. Helping Mia prepare for her anticipated ascendancy is Loie Bryce, her best friend and eternal sidekick extraordinaire. The girls' intense friendship has never wavered until now, when Andreas arrives in Salcey Ridge. They both fall hard for the British hottie, who quickly becomes a fixture in their lives. When they discover that Andreas is not who he appears to be, the frightening reality of Mia's powers finally hits home. The nearer Mia's birthday draws, the more the danger escalates and long-buried lies are exposed, putting the girls on a path that they never expected.

Oh woe is me!!

That's pretty much the pov that this story was told.

A girl who's besty is going to get some super duper powers on her 17th birthday (I'm thinking something like Superman with the x-ray vision and flying or maybe Aquaman, even), and her parents are dead, and she lives with her drunk as a skunk smokey grandma who doesn't love her, but her bestie's mom super loves her and UGGGGS!!!!! It just drove me mad!!

I'm not saying this is a bad story... but kids... I was expecting something different.

LIKE SUPER HEROS!!

I was expecting a cape or light vision or you know... a utility belt!!

What I got was something like "THE IRON KING". You know.. the kind of creatures from "A Midsummer's Night Dream" (or so I hear)

I don't know kids... this just didn't sit with me.

You have Loie who tells the story and is so emo that I want to slap her. Then you have Mia who fills out her bikini nicely and is going to get the super powers. THen there is British Hot to Trot boy, Andres who has a heaving 17 year old lickable chest and wants to hang out with two girls. Mia lives at a McMansion and Loie lives in a run down roach apartment with her grandma who tells her to cook her own tv dinner. ARGS!! Again... where are the super heros?

So, for like 38% of the book I'm pretty bored. I don't want to be, and I understand that the story needs to be set up... but kids, I'm about ready to go to sleep. THen at 38% some action starts happening.

Word to the wise... tough it out... It is going to get better.

But if you're expecting super hero action then you're baking up the wrong book. I must admit that I was very disappointed in that. I thought we were going to go to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. But no... that totally didn't happen. And if you are expecting radioactive spiders or green lanterns or even aliens.... that's not going to happen either. In my opinion this is more of your run of the mill paranormal book that takes place between two besties and a hot boy. Not really my cup of Batman tea.

I think that maybe younger girls would like this better than me. I'm curious how a 12 year old would rate it.

Perhaps, I'm a bit too picky, but I really was expecting something super about this story and not just supernatural. I think when the description said "SUPER POWERS" I took that as "SUPER HERO" and not "SUPER HUMAN". But, we all know I have a one-track mind when it comes to SUPER :)

What I liked about the story was that the plot and characters were very imaginative. I did believe that it was told by a teenage girl and not an adult, and I also enjoyed the relationship between the two girls.

What I didn't like about the story was how emo the main character, Loie, was, how HARD her life was, and really that she told the story. I would have rather heard this tale from Mia.

I'm recommending this to younger girls.

Vampire Breed

Title: Vampire Breed (Kiera Hudson #4)
Author: Tim O'Rourke
Published: December 2011
Synopsis from Goodreads

Kiera Hudson wakes to find herself imprisoned. Experiencing nightmares and visions, she slowly realises that she has been subjected to a series of sinister tests and operations. Addicted to blood and in pain, Kiera knows that if she is to survive she will need to escape from her cage. But who is the werewolf that secretly visits her during the night and can Kiera trust him? Where are her friends and why hasn’t Potter come to rescue her as he promised? With no word or message from Luke and Potter, she fears that they might be dead.

But with only a chair and a book for comfort in her cage, can Kiera escape? And even if she does, what will she find on the other side of her cell walls?

Vampire Breed is Book 4 of the Kiera Hudson series.

So far she's become a cop, fell in love with a Vampyrus, saved a town or something, got talked into babysitting, then tried to save a girl, and then fell in love with an icky character that I do not like but if I cast him as an X-men then I would, and went hunting for things, had her mom try to give her some blood, and woke up in a cage.

Kinda sounds like Resident Evil without the zombies lolz!

But it's good ;)

You know, they could actually make a video game of this, now that I think about it. I could see kids playing it.

In Vampire Breed, Kiera keeps remembering memories that were either blocked or hidden and we get to hear the beginning of the story in bits and pieces which I found ultra cool. She wakes up in a zoo (with no fighting robots. I now believe after seeing Real Steal that all zoos should have fighting robots in them) and has to deal with this white paw giving her kibbles and bits and appears to be trapped.

Oh! The word is APPEARS! Cuz we all know that Kiera is a super sleuth and can totally SEE and with her detective eyes she can probably find a way outta there.

Well, probably.

We are now one book away from this adventure ending. I don't really know how much I can spill about this without wrecking it. I mean, almost everything told is pretty crucial to the story. Let's see.... Does Kiera drink the blood that her Mommy offered her from Vampire Hunt? Well, I could tell you that but if I did then it might wreck this book. Does Kiera find Kayla? Yeah, she's been hunting for her throughout the last book and if I tell you that one then it might wreck this book, too.

See... it's kinda hard.

So, instead, for your entertainment, I will cast the characters with mutants and one hottie.

Kiera played by Jean Grey cuz you know.... she's important to the series and this will totally make sense later

Luke can be played by Cyclops. Cuz honestly, don't we all hate Cyclops? He's the leader and a goody two shoes and we all wonder what the hell Jean is doing with him when we'd rather her be with a badder boy (wait a sec.. I'm getting to that)

And then we have Potter. What is up with you people? Ok, apparently you all love Potter and I find him as so much of a prick... and this goes against everything I stand for but we'll cast him as Wolverine. But not Hugh Jackman Wolverine!! I will not permit that. Noes, cuz then he'd be cute(r).

Now, the reason I did this is because, like I said, we all want the heroine to hook up with more of a bad boy. I mean, why would you want a goody two shoes like Summers? ICKS! Why doesn't Jean hook up with Logan? So, just like that, we all want (not me) to see Kiera hook up with Potter. And thus.... this

And then there's Kayla. She's one of my favorite characters. She's young, new, and full of spunk. So, I would cast her as Jubilee.

Now, I know what you're thinking. You don't like Jubilee, but I always liked her and since it's my review I can do that ;) HAHAS! But! This also works because that means Jean will be all nurturing with her. So, I think it works out with Kiera and Kayla's relationship.

And last but not least we have Isidor. Isidor was easy to cast. He's young, sexy, shoots arrows... I mean stakes... and has a habit of taking his shirt off. So, I'm dropping the X-men and moving on to Smallville. Isidor can be played by Green Arrow.

I mean, once Isidor was introduced to the series Green Arrow was all I could think about. And this is why I like him so much. For one, Mr. Tim has realized that some of us like a SWEET little bad boy. And another.. he has a habit of taking off Izzy's shirt lolz!! Just like Smallville always took off Green Arrow's at every chance they could. No, seriously! Watch the show! I think it was in his contract or something ;)

Well, there ya go folks! We're almost to the end. How on earth is our team going to get out of this? What am I talking about? Well, read the series and find out!

Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1)

Title: Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days #1)
Author: Susan Ee
Published: May 2011
Synopsis from Goodreads

It's been six weeks since angels of the apocalypse descended to demolish the modern world. Street gangs rule the day while fear and superstition rule the night. When warrior angels fly away with a helpless little girl, her seventeen-year-old sister Penryn will do anything to get her back.

Anything, including making a deal with an enemy angel.

Raffe is a warrior who lies broken and wingless on the street. After eons of fighting his own battles, he finds himself being rescued from a desperate situation by a half-starved teenage girl.

Traveling through a dark and twisted Northern California, they have only each other to rely on for survival. Together, they journey toward the angels' stronghold in San Francisco where she'll risk everything to rescue her sister and he'll put himself at the mercy of his greatest enemies for the chance to be made whole again.

This book was AWESOME!!

No... scratch that....

It was BEYOND AWESOME!!

BEAWESOME!!!

Words can not describe how much I enjoyed this book.... but I'll try.

Ok, yeah, that about covers it ;)

I honestly didn't know that angels could be that cool.

Wait... not just angels.

ARCHANGELS!!!

We're talking about kick ass warrior angels with swords and a thirst for blood!!

EEEE!!!

Again.....

AWESOME!!

The story takes place six weeks after an all out apocalypse has broken out on the human race.

And who are we at war with?

ANGELS!!

That's right!! ANGELS!!

Gone are the thoughts that angels are the good guys. These ones want us dead and wiped off the face of the Earth.

All I can say is AWESOME!

Penryn, her mom, and her wheelchair bound sister, Paige are on the run. Hiding just to try to stay alive. But they wind up in the wrong place at the wrong time. A gang of angels are attacking one of their own. Tearing his wings off. Leaving him for dead. They don't want to get noticed. But they do. And because of that Paige is snatched from Penryn and their demented mother is no where to be found.

Penryn now has to find a way to get her sister back. Her mother can take care of herself. She's not right in the head. The way I thought of her was kind of like Sarah Connor. Remember in the end how Sarah Connor was getting all obsessed with the Resistance and Judgement Day? Well, Penryn's mother had the same idea when it came to angels... although with a more screws loose.

Now with her mother gone, and her sister taken by angels, Penryn's only hope in finding Paige lies with the wingless angel before her. He has to know where their lair is. But is he alive to show her the way? If he is what can she bargain with? That's when Penryn takes his wings.

The angel's name is Raffe and let's just say I freaking ADORE HIM! He's funny, sarcastic, and warrior strong! He's just all around great!

But this isn't an angel that Penyrn can fall in love with. That's forbidden. Angels are not allowed to be with humans in that way.

And yet, they need each other. Penryn needs Raffe to show her the way to the Angel's lair and Raffe needs get there in hopes that he can get his wings reattached. That is if he helps Penryn find her sister.

This book is just jam packed full of adventure, jaw dropping horror, and clever characters. I loved every minute. I have heard people compare this to the Hunger Games but in my opinion this book was ten times BETTER!!

I loved the lore of the archangels. I loved learning about them. I don't know much about angels but this book opened my eyes to how freaking cool and warrior-like they can be. I enjoyed the way author made each one different. It will definitely have you googling each one when Penryn and Raffe meet others.

I can't tell you how much I would recommend this book. There's something for everyone. And I feel that a fourteen year old would be just fine reading this. There isn't much cussing but there is violence. When I was fourteen this book would have been right up my alley.

My favorite apocalyptic book is "The Road". "Angelfall" is on the cusp of knocking "The Road" of the ledge. I'm actually unsure which one I like best. It's that good!

So, kids... Go buy this book!! You won't be sorry!!

And I can't wait for the next one to come out. I'm literally on pins and needs with anticipation!

Everblossom: A Short Story and Poetry Anthology

Title: Everblossom: A Short Story and Poetry Anthology
Author: Larissa Hinton
Published: August 2011
Synopsis from Goodreads

An anthology that will quench your thirst for more than the ordinary.

Everblossom is a journey through poems and short stories that may seem ordinary on the surface but dig a little deeper and the world not only shifts. It changes.

From the author who brought you Iwishacana/Acanawishi, she now brings you a dash of everything from dark fantasy to the paranormal to even romance. So prepare yourself to delve into the three stages of the flower from bud to blossom then back to seed, you'll go through them all with a whole new perspective on what it all truly means.

I adore short stories. I enjoy a story that leaves me wanting more and has me thinking what could happen next once that final word is read. "Everblossom" is one of those books that will leave you writing the next lines so you can find out what will happen next.

"Everblossom" is split into three sections, - Seed, Bud, Blossom- and while I'm sure some people will find the too short stories a bit frustrating but I find them very interesting. The author has a way of sucking us into a situation without knowing the prior who, what, or wheres, and by the time she is finished all you are left saying is more more more!

This isn't a very long book. It probably took me only two hours to read, but it was quite enjoyable. The author stays true to her theme as we read stories from the beginning of life to the hard decisions of later on.

While, I'm unsure if I would label this as GRIPPING, I would definitely describe it as worthwhile.

I hope this author lengthens a few of her stories for they have some great potential.

Seed
I found these stories to mainly revolve around the beginnings of life or childhood. The stories were very interesting and well done. I enjoyed how they stayed true to SHORT STORY form and just gave you a snippet of everything instead of starting at a beginning.

The poetry in Seed was a bit rough but the short stories were very well done.

You can definitely feel the emotion in them.

"CRACK" was my favorite story in Seed. I liked the sense of only knowing so little about what the mother did to the child. It really made me want to know what happens next as I made up a story on why the woman would slap her child.

Bud
I believe Bud to be those difficult teen years. Like Seed it was a variety of alternating poem and short stories. The poems have greatly improved and the stories were just as interesting if not more so.

My favorite short story in this section was "Crash and Burn". I believe it would make for a great story. It gave me a taste of heartache and romance that made me hunger for more. I hope the author thinks about continuing it.

Bus also has a more supernatural feel to it. While it was a bit different from Seed, I found myself enjoying it more.

Blossom
This section (to me) has more drama. A couple of the stories are picked up from the previous sections so you can get a glimpse of what will happen next. And a few of the stories are stand alones but leave you wanting just a nibble more.

I found the poetry in this section to be a bit bland considering how much I enjoyed the poems in BUD. Not bad, but I think they need just a tad bit of work.

Overall
I say give it a shot. It doesn't take long to read and it leaves you with a great insight to what this author can do!

You want a chance to read this for yourself? Well since the author, Larissa Hinton, is made of awesome we have one eBook copy of Everblossom to give away!! All you have to do is fill out the Rafflecopter form below.
