Vanish (Firelight 2)

Title: Vanish (Firelight #2)
Author: Sophie Jordan
Published: September 6th 2011
Synopsis from Goodreads

To save the life of the boy she loves, Jacinda did the unthinkable: She betrayed the most closely-guarded secret of her kind. Now she must return to the protection of her pride knowing she might never see Will again—and worse, that because his mind has been shaded, Will’s memories of that fateful night and why she had to flee are gone.

Back home, Jacinda is greeted with hostility and must work to prove her loyalty for both her sake and her family’s. Among the few who will even talk to her are Cassian, the pride’s heir apparent who has always wanted her, and her sister, Tamra, who has been forever changed by a twist of fate. Jacinda knows that she should forget Will and move on—that if he managed to remember and keep his promise to find her, it would only endanger them both. Yet she clings to the hope that someday they will be together again. When the chance arrives to follow her heart, will she risk everything for love?

In bestselling author Sophie Jordan’s dramatic follow-up to Firelight, forbidden love burns brighter than ever.

Vanish is the sequel to Firelight and there is no freaking way this could be a stand-alone novel. SO for those of you who don't want possible spoiler bunnies on Firelight please look away... NOW.

I swear man. Were you not screaming at Firelight when they ended it like that? Like WTF?!! I was totally screaming!!

Cassian finds Jacinda

Jacinda reveals to Will that she's a Draki

and holy ham hocks they have to run away from the hunters... I mean fly.

Good googily mooglies!! WHAT?!!!

Well, Vanish picks up where Firelight left off and if you haven't read Firelight in a while now might be the time to pick it up for a re-read or find a spoiler bunny review. It may help because I for one was kind of lost for a chapter or two. The plot is slowly explained and you are brought back up to speed but I really think a refresher course would have been to my benefit. Draki 101.

This book mainly takes place in Dragon Land and while there isn't much ro-dragon-mance going on there is uber tons of action, you learn an OMG secret, there's a OH NO WAY moment, and then you bite your nails for the rest of the book.

It is awesome but I will warn you it's building up to such a giant cliffy that you will scream, you will pout, and you will be wanting more.

Remember... I warned you.

The characters in the book are quite believable for teenagers.

The love triangle has become some sort of odd love oblong (you'll see)

The cover is
NOT Jacinda.

And Mom doesn't have a big part in the book but it's big enough that you're left wondering "Where are they going with this?"

You are also left wondering more and more about Will. I don't want to wreck anything but I feel they might be building up to what I kinda thought back in Firelight and if what I think is true I think the next book is going to be so explosive that my squees will be picked up in space. Yes.. it will be that awesome. I can't wait to find out if I'm right.

The detail of the adventure in this book is very very descriptive which makes me a happy girl. I could easily see and believe everything that happened.

Although... the one thing that was described that kinda shocked me was the size of the Draki. Apparently they can fit into cars? Now, I was kinda thinking they turned into big huge dinosaur-esq dragons. You know... Jane meets Godzilla. But no... they can fit into a car so you kinda have to wonder...

(A) Do they walk on 2 feet?

(B) Do they have tails?

(C) Do pregnant Drakis lay eggs?

ok ok... that last one was for my amusement... But really... DO they?

All in all I'm satisfied with this book. It would have gotten a higher score but it was all the dang build up that lowered it for me. But that just means the next book will be most awesome and I honestly can't wait to read it.

One thing that thrilled me was the size. It's not a big chunk-a-monk and for that I thank the author. Too many YA authors are trying to out-write each other and all I want is a good story. The Firelight series promises to give me that :)

So, go out and read my fellow Draki lovers!! I hope you enjoy it!

3.7 Stars -- so close to a 4 it's scary.

  1. Awesomeness. Dragons, love, suspense, and fighting. This book has it all. It was no surprise that this second installment of the Firelight series was just as great as the first. Sometimes you can guess where a series is headed, but Vanish was full of surprises, and all very interesting... I can't wait for the next one!!! P.S. I love Cassian. I hope when the series ends that he's happy. P.P.S. Only complaint is that Will is too quick at understanding and forgiving.
