WoW: The Raven Boys

Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we just can't wait to get our sticky fingers on.

Title:  The Raven Boys
Author:
Release Date: September 18. 2012
Synopsis from Goodreads

“There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve,” Neeve said. “Either you’re his true love . . . or you killed him.”

It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive.

Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her.

His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

From Maggie Stiefvater, the bestselling and acclaimed author of theShiver trilogy and The Scorpio Races, comes a spellbinding new series where the inevitability of death and the nature of love lead us to a place we’ve never been before.

We here at Paranormal Wastelands have a bone to pick with the Shiver Lady. We love the Shiver Lady. We think she's fabulous. But is she able to WOW us again? Cuz we were not amused with The Scorpio Races. That was not a lochness monster like we hoped.

Is it possible to win us back?

So, because we are optimistic and want to squee, the thought of this book has us chanting:

 Must have NOWS!
We needs it!!
We wants it!!
We can't lives without it!!

*seriously Shiver Lady.... we don't want any hobbit  speak in this book!

Now that you've heard what our CAN'T WAIT book is... What's yours? Drop us a comment so we can find out what has you on pins and needles.

The Scorpio Races - A difference of Opinion

Title: The Scorpio Races
Author: Maggie Stiefvater
Published: October 2011
Synopsis from Goodreads

It happens at the start of every November: the Scorpio Races. Riders attempt to keep hold of their water horses long enough to make it to the finish line. Some riders live. Others die.

At age nineteen, Sean Kendrick is the returning champion. He is a young man of few words, and if he has any fears, he keeps them buried deep, where no one else can see them.

Puck Connolly is different. She never meant to ride in the Scorpio Races. But fate hasn’t given her much of a chance. So she enters the competition — the first girl ever to do so. She is in no way prepared for what is going to happen.

Ok I know that I said this review was going to have to wait mostly because I just didn't know what to say, or how to right it...but that would be a lie.

I terrible lie, to disguise a terrible truth...A truth that in the end my loyalty to provide a honest review has to outweigh my love for all things Maggie right?

So here it is...the truth is...well I just didn't LOVE this the way I loved Shiver, Linger, and Forever Please don't get me wrong there is great OMG-MAGGIE-YOU-DIDN'T?-AND-THIS-IS-WHY-I-LOVE-YOU moments.

There is without a doubt no way for you to not love the characters here. I mean Maggie knows her *bleeep* when it comes to building a character in a way that leaves you lost inside their world. Even at time inside them. Kate Connoly was perfection for me. She was selfish with just the right amount of selfishness thrown in to remind us that she is in fact the age she is supposed to be. Which is no easy feet considering it is just her, her older brother Gabe, and her younger brother Finn made orphans by the capall uisce. (blood lusting water horses that plague the island, although I wouldn't really say "plague" is the right word.)With no money or time to spare Kate does the only thing she thinks she can do...she enters the Scorpio Races. But the races are no place for a normal horse. No place for a girl. These races are for men with death wishes and the deadly capall uisce they have managed to pull from the sea. A sea that sings louder and louder as the winter months approach. Calling the blood-lusting water horses back to the sea. Driving them crazy, and mad with longing with each approaching day.

It is the first day of November and so, someone will die...

And don't even get me on Sean Kennrick. He is just as broken as Kate, and together they make quite a pair. Yes I wish they would have made a pair a little sooner. I would have loved to see some more in there. The relationship is a rocky cliff over a ragged sea...it builds and builds until it finally crashes together, making it difficult to sea where the sea ends and the rocks begin. At first it is no mystery that Kate is the rock, and Sean is the sea...but now I'm not so sure anymore. Which I love!

In the end this is a story about working to get what brings you happiness, thinking you know exactly what that is, losing it, and finding out that you got your happiness...you just didn't know that it could come a different way, or that maybe what you thought would equal happiness and what actually does, is two different things. For me this book was good. But would I call it great? Because it pains me to answer that question...I'm going to have to plead the fifth.

I love the Shiver Lady. I mean, I absolutely adore her.

But kids... I'm not going to call her the Horse Lady or the Scorpio Race Chick or anything like that because this book was a major FAIL in my opinion.

I mean.. WHAT THE HECK, SHIVER LADY!?! I want to read a book about romance and young love and you know... something cool!! Not a book about lochness non monstery horse things that have seaweed mains and eat people but can be tamed and a donkey horse. What the heck was this about?!! Oh, and it's told in Hobbit Lingo and when Americans do that it just uber ticks me off. I mean, I understand why Hobbits would write in Hobbit Lingo but us Americans can't wing it and when we try it just sounds uber pushed cuz it winds up sound like PIP and "PEASE SIR, MAY I HAVE SOME MORE." Not cool.

I couldn't even get into this story. Some girly who's orphaned cuz her parents got eaten by a water horse or something, and she lives with her brothers and a most awesome cat.... but the cat didn't get enough air time so I got bored.

Then there was this boy who raised water horses for this dude and his cruddy son and like his Dad was eaten by a Water Horse (apparently parents taste delicious to water horses... there's a reason to be abstinent!! Don't have sex kids or Water Horses will find you tasty!!) but he loves water horses and can't live without them and is a super stud when it comes to horse races and yadda yadda (and by horse I mean Water Horses)

Ugs.... But it was just sooo super boring and Hobbity!! Nothing against Hobbits... they're great.... but seriously... I was waiting for people to start sweeping chimneys and talking about their yellowy teeth and handing out shillings to people in fingerless gloves. AHHH!!! The horror!!

I'm more of a modern girl... unless it's a highlander story and then I'll be whatever you want.... But I did NOT dig this book AT ALL!! I got through about a quarter of it and just wanted to shout "ENOUGH!!" I couldn't get through it. I told DARKFALLEN to tell me the entire story and she did and quite frankly I wouldn't even go see a movie about what she told me.

This was just NOT NOT NOT for me! ANd I'm sorry Shiver Lady... But I gotta flop this one.

~*~

This week we got some of the most awesome swag EVER in our mailbox!! Like so spectacularly awesome that we squee diddled our little teeny tiny heads off !!

First we got something from the most awesome hobbit Tim O'Rourke the author of Vampire Shift.

You might remember us talking about that certain book only because well we were awesome in it and because of that we have totally boosted hobbit's fame and because he loves us so much he promised us a most awesome gift.

Well, it has finally made it to the land of Alabama!! It took a while, had a bit of a shaky journey... but ZOMG it was worth the wait!!

Here it is!! I wonder what's inside?

I fear the Keebler Elves are still at war. EASTSIDE!!

Greta's cat's had one fun time going through the box.

Especially Lucky

But that isn't what made us squee.

What made us squee are these two lovely dudes!

The Grey is for Darkfallen. Isn't he cute? Greta will be sending him to her shortly

And this lovely is for Greta.

Its unclear if he has a name so she has decided to call him Lieutenant Cupcake and has him proudly displayed on her mantle. She has been warned to keep him clear of jelly beans. She will try her best to not break this rule but in case of an Apocalyptic Jelly Bean takeover she doesn't want to be held accountable ;)

So thank you TIM!!! You are by far our most favorite hobbit.

Darkfallen: I thought Gavin Rossdale was your favorite hobbit

Greta: Oh yeah... he is....

SO thank you TIM!! You are by far our most favorite hobbit that we don't want to undress with our eyes!!

Darkfallen meets Maggie Steifvator! Wanna see?

Ok so its' no secret that us girls here at Paranormal Wastelands LOVE...

LOVE...
LOVE....us some Maggie!
Welps I am soooooo super stoked that I got to meet her this week and I can tell you she is even more awesome in person!
A little something you should know about me....when I am around famous people I get so nervous I've been known to lose my lunch.
It's not rational, this I know. I mean they are just people for GAWDS sake....but still
Try telling my nerves that;)
So I am very happy to report that I met Maggie, and I didn't puke on her!
Although I was literally shaking like a leaf. So much so Maggie tried to tell me she was actually her evil twin sister in attempt to calm me down....it didn't work.

But I thought I would share some video footage of the event as well as some pics!
So even thought you couldn't make it...you will feel like you were there.

See I love ya'll so much I just can't let you miss this stuff ;)
WARNING: The videos you are about to watch may cause uncontrollable laughter. I suggest you proceed with cation, and preferably, for the health of your comp and you, without food or drink in your mouth. We would hate to make you choke, or spray you poor computer with a mouthful of orange soda *winks*
This is where Maggie learns that Linger made it on the New York Times best seller list!

(sorry you have to follow the link, blogger is rebelling against video uploads apparently...I've tried it every way possible.)

This is the story of when Maggie visits Zultan the Wolf man, a guy in Hungary that trains wolfs for movies. Please not that we learned that Maggie was basically thrown in a pen with over 20 wolves, and 3 different packs, unto which at one point 1 wolf won the privilege to sit next to her and stick his tongue in her mouth....she doesn't recommend the tongue part. GRITTY

And lastly this is what Maggie has to say about Cole St. Clair, as well as a little of the Q&A session. The end about bagpipes his hilarious!

And now for some pics of the event and A VERY VERY shaking in her converse Darkfallen...
Yep that's right...two copies of Scorpio Races were right within my reach. However I am sad to report I didn't win it:(

And this is our bag-o-goodies for Maggie

Here Maggie opens her goodies and even models the hat Greta made for her:)
And YES I WAS SHAKING SOOOOO BAD!! This is the part where Maggie tried to convince me she wasn't actually Maggie Steifvator in effort to stop my trembling...

To my suprise she was parked only 2 spots from me!!

So yes I took my pic with her car too!

Look at the wolfy she drew for Greta...in like 2.5 seconds! This women is gifted, no other word for it;)

Welps that was my amazing night!
Hope you enjoyed:)

The thrilling conclusion to #1 bestselling Shiver trilogy from Maggie Stiefvater

then.

When Sam met Grace, he was a wolf and she was a girl. Eventually he found a way to become a boy, and their love moved from a curious distance to the intense closeness of shared lives.

now.

That should have been the end of their story. But Grace was not meant to stay human. Now she is the wolf. And the wolves of Mercy Falls are about to be killed in one final, spectacular hunt.

forever.

Sam would do anything for Grace. But can one boy and one love really change a hostile, predatory world? The past, the present, and the future are about to collide in one pure moment - a moment of death or life, farewell or forever.

Darkfallen's thoughts:
With ta-tings & jazz hands compliments of Greta!!

*~*~* WARNING IF YOU HAVE NOT READ SHIVER & LINGER DO NOT READ THIS!! THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR THE FIRST 2 BOOKS. HOWEVER I PROMISE THAT THIS IS A SPOILER FREE ZONE WHEN IT COMES TO FOREVER *~*~*

Darkfallen: Maggie won over my heart in Shiver. Shiver was my first werewolf read and I have never looked back.

Greta: I think Shiver was the first teenage werewolf book that stole my heart ;) Hunger Like No Other was my first werewolf book.

Darkfallen: Then there was Linger that took things to a whole new level and Maggie seemed to perfect the art of the evil cliffy!

Greta: Oh snap!

Darkfallen: I mean in Shiver you’re on the edge of your seat at the very end, biting your nails, tears are disobeying your cease and desist order, and then….Sam steps out of the woods, very solidly human and more importantly alive!

Greta: Squee!!

Darkfallen: But OMG in Linger you meet Cole which can I just take a moment to drool over him here?

Greta: Dude... DUDE..... DUDE!!!!

Darkfallen: Ok I’m Back!

Greta: Took you long enough!

Darkfallen: We meet Cole and we get a deeper look into Isabel. While Isabel is still the resident bitch you find you kind of like having her around, maybe you even start rooting for her a little bit. Cole intrigues you and you want more, need to know more! And Grace and Sam are as sweet as ever. You can’t help but love them, and now the tears stream down your face off and on the whole time. You cry for Isabel. You cry for Cole. You cry for Sam & Grace. And you don’t ever bother with the cease and desist order anymore. You just let it happen. Letting Maggie grab your emotions and take you where she wants you. Only she leaves you standing on a blood smeared floor in a hospital room, staring out a broken window. Glass shards crunching beneath your feet as the tears pull and mix with the blood on the floor. Your frozen there with the book in your hands staring at a wolf…staring at Grace…and inside you die a little....lots..

And now everything we have been waiting for…

All the answers we have been searching for…

Everything we have been waiting forever for…

Comes down to this!

Greta: Will there be puppies?!!!

Darkfallen: ? What?! NOES!!

Again Forever is written from four points of view and while most would say “Isn’t that confusing?” I have to tell you it’s not. Not even a little. In fact I wouldn’t want it any other way. I learned so SO much about Cole and Isabel in this book. I loved every minute that I got to spend inside their head. And yes I swoon for Cole even more now. Now that I know, that I finally understand the man behind the mask that is Cole St. Claire.

He is broken and twisted. Lost inside himself and it is killing him, but we see him grow, see him change. In the end we couldn’t have asked for a better person to be in Sam & Grace’s life.

I get it now... Why Beck picked him.

Greta: Yes sir re bobby!!! It totally makes sense now.

Darkfallen: Isabel also seems to thaw a lot more in this book and now I DO love her and I have no problem admitting it. In fact…I even cried for her.
There I said it!
And I’ll say it again. I turned my emotions back over to Maggie and she lead to a place I least expected…
Crying with Isabel on a bathroom floor.
(once you read it you’ll understand. NO I was NOT actually on a bathroom floor *winks*)

Greta: Are you sure? You sure did sound echoy the last time I called ;)

Darkfallen: Why do I always feel the need to slap Greta? lolz
Anyways where was I?
Oh yea...
Then with Sam & Grace…what can I say? Their love is so perfect, simple yet complicated, innocent, and all-consuming that you can’t help but feel it. It’s that I-will-do-anything-include-die-for-you kind of love,

Greta: That reminds me of Robin Hood. (fun fact: Greta loves "Prince of Thieves")

Darkfallen: and while in some series the author strives for that but it never quiet makes it. They always fall just short of believable…NOT here.
You believe every part of it and take it all with you when long after you have read the last page. I especially love how Grace & Sam finally handle her parents. I wanted to hug them both for that.

Greta: I loved the slow blink of Christmas lights and pizza flavored........

Darkfallen: SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
*smacks Greta*
I do want to say this though…

A long time ago I made predictions for how this series would end. I was right about so much, yet wrong about EVERYTHING!

Greta: I on the other hand had EVERYTHING wrong and not a dang thing right!

Darkfallen: With that being said I say this: From a writers point of view the ending is flawless. Most writers can’t find it in them to leave it the way Maggie did, and for that I applaud her. It’s not all nice and neat, perfectly packaged and tied with a pink bow.
It’s more like she put everything in the box, left out the tissue paper, handed you the wrapping paper, ribbon, tape, and scissors, and said “Here ya go,” and walked away.

Greta: Most awesome!

Darkfallen: From a readers point of view, my imagination is getting the better of me and I’m slowly tearing apart all of the possibilities, knowing that this is it, I’m not getting another book, but in its own way Forever leaves you with, maybe not an evil cliffy, but definitely a tormented one…

I find myself here knowing that it’s time to let them go. But I can’t and I won’t …not ever!

Greta: Let's read it again!

Darkfallen: Yes, yes lets!!!

Until next time...
*wipes tears* *cries I can't believe it's over* *throws herself in Greta's lap*
Omph! Sorry guys I gotta take care of this. Darkfallen has a hard time with goodbyes;)
